On this installment of “Books of Our Time” host Dean Lawrence R. Velvel will interview renowned American historian John Hope Franklin. Franklin is the James B. Duke Professor Emeritus of History at Duke University and is a past recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Franklin is the author of numerous highly acclaimed books, including: The Emancipation Proclamation, The Militant South, and From Slavery to Freedom: A History of African-Americans. The interview will focus on his just released autobiography Mirror to America. In this new work, Franklin, age 90, recounts his extraordinary life. Born in the Oklahoma territory and descended from slaves, he studied at Harvard and has taught at many of America's most prestigious universities. Franklin extensively recounts the institutionalized racism that he has experienced since he was a little boy, when at age six, he was forced off a train for sitting in a whites only section.
